Explore WUF12 host city through Cairo Urban Week

As a precursor to the upcoming World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo this November, Cairo Urban Week (CUW) is set to explore Cairo's rich cultural heritage and urban dynamics from 1 to 3 November. This exciting week will bring together local communities, experts, and policymakers to engage in meaningful dialogues about sustainable urbanization.

The event will feature discussions, workshops, and cultural exhibitions, offering participants a chance to explore Cairo from a local perspective. CUW will also highlight the transformative role of public spaces, with the revitalization of one public space in a low-income neighbourhood serving as a legacy project of this year's World Urban Forum.

Main programme

On 1 November, CUW  kicks off at the iconic Grand Egyptian Museum with a mix of dialogues, performances, and the grand opening of the Urban Spaces of Cairo exhibition. This exhibition explores Cairo’s public spaces—past, present, and future—offering a powerful narrative about the city’s transformation, and will remain open until 30 November. In the evening, audiences will enjoy a modern twist on classic Egyptian songs performed by Nesma Herky.

Day two moves to the heart of Downtown Cairo, where experts from academia, government, and the private sector will dive into Cairo’s urban challenges and the creative forces reshaping the city. One standout event is a public design workshop led by the Gehl team, emphasizing a "People First" approach to urban spaces.

The final day of Cairo Urban Week celebrates the launch of a legacy public space initiative in Al-Asmarat neighbourhood, home to over 15,000 families relocated from unsafe areas. The project focuses on marginalized groups—especially women, children, and the elderly—ensuring a space that fosters community and economic growth.

Side events

As part of Cairo Urban Week, side events will celebrate the city's cultural heritage and artistic expressions, offering immersive experiences that reflect Cairo’s identity.

From 29 October – 3 November, Cairo Films at Zawya Cinema will showcase the creativity of Egyptian filmmakers, offering a cinematic view of the city through their lens.

From 31 October – 3 November, Cairo Walks will guide participants through the city's architectural and artistic gems in Old Cairo and Downtown, blending history with contemporary art.

It all starts at Cairo

Cairo Urban Week is more than just an event; it's a celebration of Cairo's legacy and its future. From engaging dialogues on urban planning to public space activations, from artistic performances to walking tours through the city’s streets, Cairo Urban Week promises to inspire, engage, and connect participants with the spirit of this vibrant metropolis. As we embrace the theme "It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities," let us also pay tribute to our host city and recognize that it all starts in Cairo for this 12th session of the World Urban Forum.
