Summary

A key threat to the achievement of SDG 11 in Nigeria is the continuous emergence and expansion of slums which are characterized by poor housing and dysfunctional physical and social infrastructure. Slums are homes to the working poor who are a critical labour force and important to the economic survival of our cities. As a result, urban governments have devised several approaches to the management of cities and economic development. These approaches have resulted in different outcomes. For example, Lagos and Kebbi states now collaborate on food security. Other states have developed similar models for housing, resilience, and industrial development. This event will explore how such collaborations have resulted in poverty alleviation, sustainable livelihood, and slum upgrading. It is expected to provide an evidence-based narrative towards enhanced urban management of cities in Nigeria

The objectives of the event are to:
(i) Explore the manifestation of slums in Nigerian cities;
(ii) Appraise collaboration approaches to slum management and sustainable livelihood of the urban poor;
