Summary

The government of Kenya through the state department for housing and urban development is implementing the SDG number 11 sustainable cities and communities through provision of social and affordable housing in fulfillment of the Kenya constitution article 43 1(b). PINUA-1 offers avenues towards inclusive community development, housing finance, and sustainable housing construction prompting community and household investments in addition to the private sector investments. These investments are not only financial but ‘in-kind’ as well in ways such as mobilizing inputs through networks, recycling and reusing materials, innovations using local knowledge, and, capitalizing on their sense of ownership or ‘sweat equity’.
The interaction between public, private and the community aims to unlock 3 key delivery streams of:
1. Participatory Slum Upgrading
2. Cooperative-led green social rental housing
3. Owner-driven/household-led incremental and green low-cost housing

Objectives

1. The overall objective of PINUA is inclusive, green and resilient urbanization in Kenya.
Specific Objectives
To unlock and upscale adequate green housing and communities’ eco-coproduction.
To boost regularized informal settlements to integrate with the rest of urban fabric
To improve livelihoods of vulnerable communities through linkages with safety nets and access to basic infrastructure
