Summary

This session is jointly organized by UCLG Eurasia and Connective Cities, with the moderation provided by the Association of German Cities. Across African, Eurasian, and German cities, rapid urbanization and shifting demographics have significantly increased housing demand. This has led to severe housing shortages, particularly in Germany, while in Eurasian and Af-rican contexts, many residents are forced into informal settlements with insufficient infra-structure and services. In countries like Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan, rural families left behind further exacerbate the housing crisis.

A common challenge faced by cities worldwide is limited access to financing options for housing developers, hindering the progress and affordability of housing projects, and leav-ing a large portion of urban populations without affordable homes.

This event gathers local leaders and experts from Eurasian, German, and African regions to explore shared challenges and discuss practical solutions that can result in tangible projects and transformative changes. UCLG Eurasia has been actively engaging with its member cities on adequate housing solutions and will contribute these insights to the discussion.

The session aligns with the overarching theme of the World Urban Forum: "It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities."

Objectives

The key goal of the event is to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and oppor-tunities related to providing adequate, affordable housing, while addressing widening ine-qualities between urban and rural populations. The session aims to identify and exchange context-specific, practical local solutions that can be transferred to other regions to address these pressing housing challenges.
