Summary

The side event is co-hosted by the Go Blue Project and the Council of Governors, Kenya to demonstrate at the global level approaches used to boost economic growth and to integrate land-sea planning for sustainable Blue Economy at the local level in Kenya’s 6 Coastal Counties (Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale,Lamu, Taita Taveta and Tana River).

The Session will focus on the unique challenges and opportunities faced by the six coastal counties of Kenya in harnessing their coastal and marine resources for sustainable development. In addition, it will be an opportunity to share best practices and experiences with other countries that are currently developing or have developed their marine spatial plans. Through this event, the co-organizers aim to highlight the importance of integrated land-sea planning approaches in ensuring the long-term viability of blue economies while fostering the well-being of coastal communities.

The event will demonstrate the Go Blue project’s capacity to address key human settlements and environmental challenges facing the blue economy in Africa, including through the use of land-sea planning and management approaches and methodologies. It will showcase community-led, participatory and low-cost technologies and approaches for stimulating benefits from coastal cities and the blue economy.

Objectives

The side event aims to catalyze concerted action towards the added value of local actions in boosting the coast economic growth and the integration of land-sea planning for the promotion of sustainable blue economy and, to showcase the multiple socio-economic and environmental benefits, of the Blue Economy approach to land-sea planning and management while enhancing of the well-being of coastal communities
