Summary

The purpose of this event is to discuss Innovative research and practices, to support the co-design and co-production of adequate housing, the promotion of legal tools, of social and economic incentives, strong multilevel partnerships and habitat real co-creation. It requires a strong political will, a strong involvement for democracy and the protection of human rights.

This led us to invite leading committed actors from different continents and different levels of administration, public and private sector, from political leaders to national and international NGOs

The housing crisis, the lack of healthy and affordable housing adapted to the today population needs, the degradation and insecurity of public spaces are challenges shared on all continents, from rural areas to megacities. “The lack of a roof” condemns to a lack of well-being and unhappiness : impairment of physical and mental health, non-access to employment, education and essential services.

Added to this, are health, environmental, economic and social crises, leading to migration, impoverishment, violence and food insecurity. All of the above call for new priorities strongly linked to the implementation of the interrelated Sustainable Development Goals supported by UN Habitat and the World Urban Forum.

Having a home is a fundamental right. Yet, everywhere, the protection of the right to housing is partly violated. Social conditions are in a process of far reaching changes. The pandemic has "worsened" all indicators and exacerbated the homelessness problem, which requires a cross-cutting approach to the SDGs, and the search for a real social contract.
