Summary

Participants will learn and leave better equipped to use innovative mapping and data co-production approaches to tackle the SDGs and improve living conditions in urban deprived areas, peripheral territories and informal settlements. This session is designed for diverse stakeholders involved in urban policy and decision-making: communities and grassroots organisations; NGOs, and governmental agencies in various sectors (e.g., statistics offices, city planning, health, water and sanitation).

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand approaches to mapping urban deprived areas using community-led mapping, community-led mapping, open geospatial data and Artificial Intelligence/Earth Observation.
Know innovative case studies including SDI Know Your City Campaign, Brazil's "Map of the Peripheries" and the IDEAMAPS justice-oriented urban data ecosystems.
Assess the added value and costs of the mapping approaches to monitor and progress SDGs in their local context
