Summary

The event "Eight years since Habitat III: Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) in Latin America" marks a critical moment in urban developments of the region. Although significant advances have been made, since the adoption of the NUA at Habitat III in 2016, it is evident that, numerous challenges still persist. Latin America is characterized by rapid urbanization, socio-economic disparities, and environmental vulnerabilities, at the forefront of urban transformation efforts.

In this context, our event aims to bring together a wide range of policymakers, urban planners, academics, and representatives from international organizations to critically assess the implementation of the NUA in the region. By gathering experts from various countries in the region, our goal is to foster inclusive dialogue, exchange knowledge, and identify collaborative actions towards building safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities.

The event will feature panel discussions and thematic presentations designed to delve into key issues and priorities shaping urban development in Latin America. Discussion topics will include, but are not limited to, adequate housing, inclusive urban planning, sustainable transportation, resilient infrastructure, participatory governance, social inclusion and sustainable finance. Through these sessions, participants will have the opportunity to learn from experiences, showcase innovative approaches, and identify best practices that can be replicated in policy formulation and implementation processes at the local, national, and regional levels.

Additionally, the event will serve as a platform to showcase ongoing initiatives, projects, and partnerships aimed at advancing the principles and objectives of the NUA. By highlighting successful case studies and lessons learned, we aim to generate collaborations, mobilize resources, and scale interventions that have demonstrated positive impacts on sustainable urban development, adequate housing, social inclusion, and economic development. It is important to note that the event will pay close attention to the various urban challenges, recognizing that issues such as poverty, inequality, gender discrimination, and environmental degradation are directly interconnected. The event will seek to promote actions that benefit all inhabitants, especially the most vulnerable groups.

Thus, the event represents a strategic opportunity to analyze progress, identify gaps, and chart a course towards building safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities in Latin America. By sharing collective experience and the commitment of National Governments, we aim to promote progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
