Summary

Waste separation activities and recycling procedures are not widespread in Libya. For some years now and to limited extent, the private sector has started investing in the collection and recycling of plastic, exploring business opportunities and creating small enterprises for the sorting, washing and preparation of the material. In very few cases, the plastic is post-processed to complete the recycling process and plastic bags and small household items are produced. One of the most pressing problems highlighted by the private sector (GIZ survey 2023) is that there are not enough raw materials to expand activities and increase production.
This event highlights the regional efforts of a small group of Libyan municipalities to build resilient communities through an innovative approach to increase plastic recycling, thus supporting a circular economy in the region. The presentations by municipal representatives will showcase the challenges faced, solutions implemented, and lessons learned in establishing formal and informal plastic collection networks. Through interactive discussions and presentations, municipal representatives will explore how collaborative actions can enhance plastic recycling efficiency and contribute to promoting and localising sustainable development goals.

Objectives

-Regional Approach Potential: The event aims to showcase the potential of adopting a regional approach catalysing efforts of individual municipalities in building resilient communities. By highlighting the collaborative efforts of Libyan municipalities, municipal representatives seek to demonstrate how collective action can lead to more effective and sustainable solutions to waste management challenges and plastic recycling initiatives.
-Challenges and Successes: Through presentations and joint discussions, insights are shared on challenges and successes experienced by Libyan municipalities in implementing plastic recycling initiatives. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the local context and factors that influence the effectiveness of recycling programs.
-Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange: The event provides a platform for stakeholders involved in waste management and circular economy to exchange ideas and foster collaboration. By facilitating discussions, we aim to promote knowledge sharing and encourage innovative approaches to address common challenges at local level.
-Strategies for Scaling Up Efforts: a main objective of the event is to explore strategies for scaling up plastic recycling efforts and integrating circular economy principles into local governance. Participants will be able to identify strategies for scaling up existing initiatives and develop actionable steps forward to promote sustainable waste management practices at the municipal level
