Summary

Transforming our cities for a better and equitable urban future, that is our goal. There is no equity without inclusion and accessibility for all. This training is about promoting inclusion of people with disabilities, and putting the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) into practice at the local level. This is closely related to SDG 10: reduced inequalities and SDG 11: sustainable cities and communities. During this session, participants will discuss and experience how people with disabilities are overcoming barriers and are able to actively participate in public decision-making. They will be involved in a role-play and get input from a facilitator who lives with a disability. Participants will debate the importance of inclusive governance principles in creating an inclusive and equitable society. Lastly, you will be familiarized with the Local Inclusion Agenda as a tool for disability inclusion. At the end of the training, participants will receive a manual with a roadmap on how they can apply the Local Inclusion Agenda in an inclusive and participatory way. This training has the following key objectives. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: - Apply appropriate language when talking about disability inclusion - Advocate for the rights of people with disabilities in their own community - Develop inclusive cooperation strategies for involving marginalized groups in general and people with disabilities in particular This training workshop is relevant for everyone, and especially for policy makers, civil society organisations, interest groups and service delivery agencies.

Objectives

The objective of this training is to: 1. Raise awareness on the need for local inclusion strategies 2. Explain the local inclusion agenda as a tool for promoting and implementing inclusion 3. To indicate the added value of relating inclusive sustainable development to the Sustainable Development Goals. This contributes to an integral mindset that is needed to ensure that accessibility and inclusion are taken up not as a silo but as the basis for all development (under municipal policy) 4. Specify conditions, do’s and don’ts for successful participation of persons with a disability in policy making and projects 5. To expand the international network on this topic
