Architects from four continents will share inspiring and practical local approaches and tools for achieving sufficient affordable and mixed-income housing. How might we work at the scale necessary to accommodate increasing urban populations, in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
Speakers will address goal setting, community participation, neighborhood context, density, and development frameworks that engage diverse populations and support shifting ways of life. By comparing work from throughout the world, this interactive workshop will explore the impact of local differences in culture, climate and context on the just development necessary to fulfill the right to housing.
Participants will dissect density, sustainability, resilience and social inclusion in best practices. The training will conclude by envisioning sustainable urban development at a scale necessary to meet local housing needs.
Participants in Density & Design: Steps Toward Green, Affordable, Equitable and Beautiful Housing will be able to: a. Identify strategies for aligning affordable housing development at scale with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) b. Understand methods for undertaking site analysis and development with equity, justice, sustainable development, and resilience goals. c. Advocate for cultural considerations, appropriate design approaches, and gender parity in housing development.
