Summary

The achievements include new tools aimed at strengthening the capacity of national stakeholders in building the path towards a more sustainable buildings and housing sector. Themes that this side event will address include circularity, resource and energy efficiency, innovation, and affordability. The side event is being proposed by the Ministry of the Environment Finland, UN-Habitat and the One Planet Sustainable Buildings and Constructions Programme with its partners UNEP and UNOPS.

These agencies have developed a set of tools to raise awareness of national stakeholders in sustainable consumption and production within the construction sector and to build a roadmap towards decarbonization, resiliency and sustainability of the country with an added lens on national housing programmes.

The tools which will be presented have been piloted in Sri Lanka and Burkina Faso; and additional lessons learned from the countries will be presented during the event.

Objectives

The main objectives of the event are to

Introduce the SDG12 Resource Efficient Toolkit for Sustainable Buildings and Construction. Developed jointly by UN-Habitat, UNOPS and UNEP.
Present best practices, lessons learnt and opportunities of applying the toolkit in Sri Lanka and Burkina Faso and the future expansion to other countries.
Create synergies with stakeholders working on circularity and resource efficiency in the buildings and constructions sector. - Raise awareness regarding sustainable buildings and the construction, with an emphasis on material efficiency, identify gaps and provide tools to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders.
Strengthen the productive links among construction sector stakeholders for the efficient use of resources from a circular economy perspective.
Build a case on the importance of the material value chain within the buildings and construction sector, and how housing can be a catalyser of change.
