African Union (AU) will host this networking event together with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and UN-habitat. The Session will be attended by the Honorable Ministers responsible for human settlements and urban development, and their experts, planning professionals and their association, Local Authorities, Civil society and their organizations, the African Union Commission, Economic Commission for Africa and UN Habitat. The event is structured around entrance pints such as retargeting the program to the SDG’s, examining climate actions from the perspective urban and territorial planning, and reuniting countries in the post-Covid recovery scenario. It will be the occasion to present the relevant strategies and actions in reference to the Agenda 2063 and IG-UTP, the approaches and inspiring practices carried out in Africa, and to share knowledge, pursues, opinions on the way forward to more compact, socially inclusive, better-connected cities and territories that foster sustainable urban development and are resilient to climate change..
Objectives:
1) Advancing toward the vision outlined in Agenda 2063
The main goal of this event is to promote progress toward "A prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development" by strengthening institutional capacities in urban and territorial planning, improving the planning system, and introducing more innovative practices to the local context.
2) Bringing member states and cities together for a common future
As the pandemic draws to a close, it's important to bring African cities back together, bringing together agencies that engage in urban planning and related fields, public institutions, global organizations, and experts to strategize for Africa's future.
3) Raising awareness and sharing planning knowledge and best practices
To raise visibility to the principles, guidelines related to urban and territorial planning that developed or implemented by African Union, UNECA and UN-Habitat. Showcase the inspiring practices and exchange experience through the process of planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in reference to IG-UTP.
4) Acquiring knowledge in terms of planning next steps
To hear feedbacks from ministers, officers and experts from African countries and cities, about emerging topics, crucial difficulties, and new innovative directions and focuses in the post-Covid recovery scenario.
5) Encouraging potential collaborations and partnerships
To mobilize potential collaboration among African member states, African cities and institutions both global and local to work together in order to promote territorial planning and urban development better aligned to principles of NUA. Furthermore, the stage of WUF11 will benefit partners and participants by urging global organizations (NGOs, professional institutions, foundations, etc.) and the media to pay attention to the opportunities lying beneath Africa's cityscape and terrain.
